Arsene Wenger is a name most football fans are familiar with, he is the manager of Arsenal FC, and has been since he replaced Bruce Rioch on 1996. At the time of his appointment, the last notable long-term manager to deliver success to the Gunners was Scotsman George Graham. Graham was at the helm for 9 years at Arsenal dating from 1986 to 1995, and was known for his direct approach in the game. Graham as a whole did a very stern job at Arsenal, delivering a near 50% win-rate over 460 games, along with 7 trophies. The arrival of Wenger dished up something quite different, here was a man who believed in playing flowing football, beating teams scoring the perfect goal, an entire different dimension to George Graham.
Whether you choose to like Wenger or not, his record in English football speaks volumes for the quality of manager he is. Ferguson might well be the most successful manager in the division, but I do believe Wenger is the greatest manager this league has seen at developing youth players and knowing when to bed them into his first-team picture.
Wenger arrived in this division with a look resembling a crazed scientist, in his time in England he has evidently proved himself to be a very intelligent man, and probably the man with the highest IQ in the division, with the wooden spoon surely going to Steve Bruce. But for all his intelligence, in the press, the way he conducts himself is simply laughable, he comes across as fickle, pety and frankly childish.
The latest incident in the long-line of Arsene Wenger gripes revolves around the horrific and unfortunate injury of promising Welshman Aaron Ramsey. On Saturday, Ramsey was the victim of an horrific injury which will see him missing from the game for roughly 12 months, and you can't help but wonder whether a player can ever properly recover from something like this and live up to their potential. Ryan Shawcross was in my opinion wrongly sent off, but I wont get into that. Needless to say, Wenger, unlike most pundits, managers and fans deemed the challenge " disgraceful " and believed a 3-match ban wouldn't do " justice " for the challenge his player was on the receiving end of. Well Arsene, let me run over a few stats and quotes for you.
1. As of 2008, Arsenal have clocked up 72 red cards under the management of Arsene Wenger, a number that will have risen now.
2. Wenger, defending 11 Arsenal red cards in 37 matches in 2002.
"the passion and commitment of the English game. You have to ask yourself if you want to take that out of the game here. When I watch a Serie A game, I’m bored after five minutes. If you want totally clean football, you’ll get bored."
Contradictory don't you think, Arsene?
3. Arsene Wenger on Martin Taylor's leg-breaking challenge on Eduardo:
“The tackle was horrendous and unforgivable.”
Arsene Wenger on Abou Diaby's sickening challenge on Gretar Steinsson resulting in a red card:
“I was not upset with the sending off but I felt it was more of a protective tackle. But he was too high so I don’t complain. Just before that I thought it was a foul on him.”
I could go on, but I wont to avoid myself feeling physically sick through sheer frustration at this man.
I think Arsene Wenger's Arsenal showed themselves up for what they are on Saturday, a joy to watch at times, but other times the manner in which they conduct themselves is simply disgusting. I refer mainly to the injury of Aaron Ramsey again, you will notice the FIRST and ONLY player to run to the aid of Aaron Ramsey and comfort him throughout his ordeal is Stoke's Glen Whelan. You always notice in the background the CAPTAIN of Arsenal consulting referee Peter Walton in a bid to get Ryan Shawcross sent-off BEFORE checking the state of his team-mates injury. Nice to see where your priorities lie, Cesc, you vile human being.
I will round-up this brief blog by saying one thing. For the first-time in my entire life, I would SOONER see Manchester United win the Premiership than Arsenal, as for all that I despise of Man Utd, the way Arsenal and Arsene Wenger conduct themselves as a whole is something this game does not need.
Let's see if the FA fine Wenger for his comments, let's see if he retracts them, I suspect a conclusive No to both of these situations.
You don't fool me Arsene, you don't fool anyone with your repetitive spouting of moronic nonsense, nor do you do yourself any favours.
Like My Arse, Arsenal FC!
